It&#8217;s worth taking\u00a0a look at your maintenance process. In essence, the main purpose of maintenance is to ensure that your equipment is operating at full production efficiency at all times \u2013 which simply means that it is continuously making you money.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Choosing the right maintenance strategy \u2013\u00a0your way to keep your money-maker running.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Before going into maintenance solutions,\u00a0the first thing for you to\u00a0decide on is your maintenance strategy, in other words, the way you manage your maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>In short, there are two main things to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Who will do the maintenance?<\/li>\n<li>How it will be done?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The question of <em>who<\/em>\u00a0is about whether you will carry out maintenance with your own people or if you will outsource it. Both can get you excellent results. The best solution depends on your\u00a0overall situation. Here are couple of points to consider:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Overall costs<\/em>: Which way will I reach the most cost-efficient and professional solution that guarantees my equipment uptime?<\/li>\n<li><em>Fixed vs. variable costs<\/em>: My own staff will be a fixed cost that is difficult to reduce when business is slower. Is it of value\u00a0to me to have cost\u00a0flexibility?<\/li>\n<li><em>Forecasting the costs<\/em>: A full-scale maintenance contract can work as an insurance policy with a pre-fixed price. Is it important for me\u00a0to know the exact cost of maintenance upfront and avoid any unpleasant surprises?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most important point\u00a0is to keep the equipment running. The cost is practically always secondary to the importance of keeping your machinery up and running. This is the case in 95% of all\u00a0processing factories.<\/p>\n<p>The question of <em>how<\/em> you handle your maintenance has even more of an impact on\u00a0the actual result than <em>who<\/em>\u00a0is doing it. There are three main options for\u00a0how to carry out\u00a0maintenance:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Corrective \/ reactive<\/li>\n<li>Preventive<\/li>\n<li>Condition-based \/ predictive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The traditional strategy for industrial equipment has been corrective or reactive maintenance. This \u201crun-to-fail\u201d strategy is appropriate for assets whose\u00a0failure will not compromise operations and which can return to service quickly and easily.<\/p>\n<p>Some equipment failures, like those of a tempering line, can shutdown the entire glass processing factory. A different maintenance strategy has evolved to avoid asset failures. This is called preventive maintenance. This strategy aims at\u00a0preventing equipment failure from happening before it actually\u00a0occurs. Preventive maintenance actions, such as a scheduled maintenance program, reduce the probability of unexpected downtime and are always equipment specific.<\/p>\n<p>Full-scale preventive maintenance can be expensive. Therefore, a new maintenance strategy was developed known as condition-based or predictive maintenance. Using\u00a0this strategy, the condition of the equipment is monitored regularly until it begins to show\u00a0evidence of deteriorating performance. Maintenance is then performed \u201cjust-in-time\u201d to prevent equipment failure. For example, predictive maintenance is often based on the analysis of the bearing heat signature, lubricant condition and rotating equipment vibration.<\/p>\n<p>The most effective maintenance strategy should be selected by\u00a0you, the person in charge of business performance \u2013 and the maintenance experts who have sufficient knowledge of the equipment and application demands.<\/p>\n<p>When you consider the <em>how<\/em>\u00a0for your tempering line maintenance, you need to check:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How important it is to me to keep the equipment running? If this is a high priority, how will I make sure to do the preventive program as guided?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of maintenance programs do different tempering line suppliers have?
