It\u2019s important to remember<\/span> your business segment <\/span>will <\/span>determine many of the requirements for your lamination process. <\/span>For example, if you are in the fa\u00e7ades business, requirements for the glass will be different from those in the interior glass market. The glass specifications will not be the same, and the line settings will be different, to<\/span>o. Moreover, for many producers the most important factor is that the line can easily adapt itself to different kinds of production. <\/span>Therefore, let\u2019s focus on the factors that matter <\/span>equally <\/span>for every glass processor<\/span>,<\/span> regardless of the business model. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

1) Optimal heating technology<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

The choice of heating technology<\/span> <\/span>directly <\/span>affect<\/span>s<\/span> the day-to-day use of <\/span>your laminating<\/span> line. <\/span>There are <\/span>mainly <\/span>two technologies <\/span>to <\/span>consider: full convection and <\/span>radiation with<\/span> convection.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Today, most furnaces are still using <\/span>infrared <\/span>radiation technology. If this is <\/span>also <\/span>your case, remember that radiation efficiency depends <\/span>greatly<\/span> <\/span>on the glass type y<\/span>ou process. I<\/span>nfrared<\/span> radiation<\/span> is only <\/span>really <\/span>effective<\/span> in heating<\/span> thick<\/span> clear glass with no coating<\/span>. Unfortunately, glass processor<\/span>s working <\/span>only <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>this<\/span> type of glass<\/span> <\/span>are few and far between<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When it comes to really optimal heating, f<\/span>ull convection <\/span>is a much better choice. <\/span>This is mainly because full convection is totally indifferent to the glass type you use. It <\/span>consistently<\/span> heats the glass uniformly<\/span>. E<\/span>ven Low-E coatings do not reflect convection heat. <\/span>So<\/span>, <\/span>there is no need to adjust<\/span> the<\/span> furnace temperature<\/span> <\/span>as<\/span> often<\/span>, saving you lots of time.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

2) The right <\/span><\/b>pre-pressing technology<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

T<\/span>he<\/span> laminating line\u2019s<\/span> pre-pressing unit<\/span> affects<\/span> how easy <\/span>it <\/span>is to operate<\/span> the press<\/span> and how uniform <\/span>the pressing result<\/span> is<\/span> for different glass sizes and shapes. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Often, laminating lines are equipped with two pressing units. In this <\/span>case<\/span>, less is more! A good press design<\/span> combined with accurate heating<\/span> is more than sufficient with only one press. Plus, you <\/span>avoid<\/span> <\/span>the <\/span>sticky situation of having a long glass pane under two press units at the same time.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The most modern pressing machines are designed so that the press unit does not need to be adjusted based on glass width or shape \u2013 <\/span>not <\/span>even automatically.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

3) Mixed production capability<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

M<\/span>ore often than not<\/span>, mixed production capability of the line is the most important factor to consider. This means that it is fast and easy to switch between different products \u2013 whether it\u2019s changing the coating, glass size, shape or sandwich thickness. The most important factors affecting this are heating and pre-pressing design (discussed in points 1 & 2) and design of cleanroom operations.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

When comparing capacities between different lines, make sure to <\/span>take into account<\/span> what is the real output you get out of the line versus theoretical capacity values. It\u2019s especially important to understand what kind of changeover time there is between products, as changeover times can cause a huge difference between actual output and theoretical output. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In the cleanroom, the most important thing is that the line enables easy operation between automatic and manual modes \u2013 depending on what kind of products you are using. Pay attention especially to how easy it is for operators to work around the line, when it comes to manually trimming and positioning the glasses. A <\/span>well designed<\/span> trimming station makes trimming easier and quicker for the operators, as well as leads to better trimming quality as well.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

4) Cleanroom design<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

The cleanroom is <\/span>an<\/span> inherent <\/span>part of the laminating line, ensuring smooth operation when loading foils and making the operators\u2019 work as straightforward as possible. <\/span>Things to <\/span>consider <\/span>for <\/span>a well-designed <\/span>cleanroom include<\/span> <\/span>ease of moving around the line, <\/span>automated and offline<\/span> methods<\/span> <\/span>of <\/span>storage of the PVB<\/span> rolls and sufficient lighting, <\/span>especially in the assembly area.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Y<\/span>ou should <\/span>also <\/span>know and maintain the temperature and humidity level <\/span>recommended<\/span> for your cleanroom as well as air filtration requirements. These are not standard but<\/span> <\/span>are <\/span>very<\/span> <\/span>specific <\/span>values<\/span> based on the type of <\/span>foils you <\/span>store.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

5) Optimize<\/span><\/b>d<\/span><\/b> machine size<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/h3>\n

Defining <\/span>a <\/span>suitable line size is crucial, especially if you are going for high-volume production. Th<\/span>e <\/span>line<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> length has a direct effect on the capacity you <\/span>can<\/span> achieve<\/span>,<\/span> due to longer travel distances of<\/span> the<\/span> conveyors and glass lifters.<\/span> <\/span>T<\/span>he larger the line, the bigger its footprint \u2013 which is also a downside.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

If only a small part of your business <\/span>comes<\/span> from long glasses, consider purchasing those from somewhere else rather than investing in a larger machine.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
